Devote Yourself to creating something that gives you purpose . . .

"So many people walk around with a meaningless life. They seem half-asleep, even when they're busy doing things they think are important. This is because they're chasing the wrong things. The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning."

Put on Your Feng Shui Eyes

This article was submitted by Jenna Boyd, a certified Feng Shui practitioner and owner of Elements of Harmony Feng Shui, LLC

Working as a Feng Shui consultant has allowed me to witness many different residential and commercial environments. Following are a few examples, along with hints to improve the chi in work or living spaces. Implementing these subtle changes can have a huge impact - without spending a lot of money.

Furniture Placement:
The golden rule in Feng Shui is to face the door, as it represents the flow of life’s opportunities. For a number of my professional clients, just turning their desk has resulted in a turn around in their business. Try placing your desk in different locations to see how productive you feel in each. Notice the narrow feeling created when it is facing the wall; or how looking out a window may be distracting. Compare this to the empowered, expansive feeling evoked when the desk is facing into the room.

In living areas, sofas are often situated with the back facing the door. This creates an unwelcoming feeling. Typically, this occurs because there are too many pieces of furniture, or the room has limited arrangement options. However, there is always a way to open up a room. Take everything out, and put back only what is necessary for the space. Look in other rooms for furniture that may fit better.

Master Bedroom:
While formal bedrooms are beautiful, when they are overdone it may take away from the comfortable, intimate feeling of a cozy, sacred space. Our environments help to create our experience, so think “yummy” by adding soft, comfortable linens, accenting with items and fabrics in warm skin tones, and artwork that evokes feelings of passion or rest.

Paint Color:
For $100 you can paint your bedroom DIY (do it yourself) style, or spend about $200 and have a painter to do it for you; either way, the room will seem brand new. Once the room is painted, the key then is to resist putting things back in their original place. Be “on purpose” with adding in furniture, accessories and art that you love.

Liven up the space:
Bring up the chi in any space for just pennies by adding one additional light source. Situate three lamps so that they form a triangle within the room, then replace low-wattage bulbs with energy-efficient 100 or 150-watt bulbs. Three-way bulbs are an excellent solution for a multi-purpose space. Plants add lushness and comfort to any room. Use nature as artwork by opening the blinds to a beautiful backyard. Hang a mirror on the wall across from a window to reflect in the beauty of nature as art.

Shelf Units:
Consider how long belongings have been sitting on the same shelves. Recently, while working with a long-time client, we discussed taking out the books and other items from a bookshelf. They had sat unmoved for at least ten years. Afterward, she called and said that she felt we had “unlocked” something in her. Long story short, her mother had arranged the bookshelf and the books had belonged to her late husband. While clearing out those books and rearranging the shelves was a subtle change on the surface, in her heart, it was a big letting go.

Where to begin:
Start in the master bedroom and work out from there. Or, focus on the area of the home where the energy feels bottlenecked. And, remember that sometimes we need others to see for us what we are unable to see for ourselves. An Elements of Harmony Feng Shui consultation can provide a plan and implementation to refresh your space and re-energize your life.

Here's Something for the Inventor

Here's something for the inventor, brought to my attention by an inventor, Deb Tacoma, inventor of the Freedom Wand.

"
Yakaboutit" was created by an inventor to showcase products made by inventors. The online site provides opportunities for inventors to gain exposure to their products by pitting their products against another product for rating, review, and sales. The inventor of "Yakaboutit" sells your products through a daily competition. By purchasing the product online you are voting for the product. So you are competing for "Purchase attention". This site is used to help an inventor become noticed. Created by an inventor for inventors, the only way to be featured on this site is to submit your product for review. This site only carries products created by inventors and independent entrepreneurs. The phrase "are you an inventor or an entrepreneur" separates the 2% who do something with their patented ideas from the 98% who never move beyond the paperwork.

You provide pictures, describe your product, tell your story, write about yourself, and add any random thoughts you feel are relevant. Your selling price determines products that you might compete against. At midnight (Eastern Standard Time) a new competition begins and the results from the prior day are revealed.

Whether you are an inventor or just someone who wants to learn about the newest products entering the market place, this site is for you. By the end of the year, you've gained exposure to 730 new products, one of which will be reward the grand prize of The Most Yakable". You can sign up to be notified about what the next day's competition will be by joining their
email club.

On Saturday, September 5th, Deb will be featured on this site with her revolutionary product the Freedom Wand, a product she invented after breaking her back. If you know someone who could benefit from her product, please cast your votes by purchasing her products on her featured day. Her products will continue to be sold on this site after the competition is over.

Good Luck Deb! To learn even more about Deb, her invention, and her business, visit her website at http://www.freedomwand.com/

Setting Goals

I received a valuable post through email the other day by a gal in our network that reminded me of the importance of setting goals. In her email she indicated that she had set a goal to give 100 facials in 100 days. I decided that because she was so motivated to write down her goals and share them with others that I would ask for a facial. I was in need of replacing my foundation and blush and thought why not support a local women's business which is one of my favorite pastimes lately.

When she arrived, we started to talk about goals as I had been following her on facebook and realized that the 100 facials was only one of her many goals. I found this to be very inspiring.

I am a list maker, each week I write down what I hope to accomplish during the week such as . . .

 1.  Update Quickbooks,
 2.  Reconcile our Bank Accounts,
 3.  Setup Appointment with . . .,
 4.  Follow-up with . . .

What I realized after spending time with Yvonne, is that she is a motivated individual that looks beyond the short-term. She has established goals in several areas of her life. With her permission I will share a few with you.

Goals by the End of August . . .
1. 30 faces by August 31 . . 20 to go . . .100 by October 31, 2009
2. Share my business opportunity with women
3. Add 5 new team members . . have 3 new this month so far
4. Bike 25 miles in 1.5 hours, have made 20 miles in 1.5 hours thus far
5. Eat healthy, love life, and share my spiritual awareness with others

She had laid out the same type of goals for September (but looking for greater accomplishments), and she has also laid out her Long Term goals.

Yvonne, thank you for the facial, but also thank you for the inspiration. It is women like you who have an a positive impact on the world around you.  At the bottom of her email messages she also share words of inspiration.

To quote only one . . .

"The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams"
 (Eleanor Roosevelt)

Yvonne Viera is a Mary Kay consultant with hopes to regain her directorship within the Mary Kay consulting business. Even in her signature she indicates a goal which is National Sales Director by 2014. I believe she will make it well in advance of that date. She can be reached at www.marykay.com/ykviera. I hope that you will help her reach her goals of 100 faces in 100 days.

Yvonne will be joining me on the Board of Directors for 3 Degrees-Connected™ so you will be hearing more from her.

If you have been busy setting goals, please leave comments to share some of your goals with others. I believe that women supporting women means learning more about one another. By sharing your goals, you might just make the needed connection to accomplish them.

Congratulations Stocked Kitchen

Stacey Krastin and Sarah Kallio have been two very busy Mom Entrepreneurs this summer editing their newest cook book "Taste". Adding to their already 250 recipes is an additional 300 recipes using ingredients that you "stock" in your kitchen making meal preparation a breeze. You will never have to go out to buy that all-important ingredient while preparing a delicious meal for your family or guests. The thirty-minute meal is really a thirty minute meal.

Congratulations on the release of your new cookbook and your Take Five Grand Rapids appearance. For anyone who missed watching Sarah Kallio on Wednesday, July 28, 2009, the video of their segment has been embedded for your viewing pleasure.

Woman of the Year Awarded To . . .

Reported in the Grand Haven Tribune - May 7, 2009

by Becky Vargo

SPRING LAKE — Donaylle Rogers said she could have talked all day about what she's gone through in growing up a minority. She said she was used to being picked last or being ignored.

"It's always been really hard to find my place," she said. So when Rogers was informed she was the recipient of this year's Counterpart Distinguished Woman of the Year Award, "I really didn't get it," she said.

Committee members, who usually were able to surprise the recipient with the annual honor, had to tell Rogers she had won in order to get her to cancel lunch-hour appointments with her clients Wednesday. It had to be something really important for Rogers to do that.

Rogers still didn't realize the impact until her name was announced and she was compared to the others who had previously won the award from the local women's group.

"As our members know, it has been a 28-year tradition of Counterpart to welcome bright, strong, committed women into its membership," said Bobbi Sabine, the organization's president and 2005 award recipient. "So it's only fitting that we ... take a leadership role in recognizing those women in our community who possess these same worthy characteristics, and who have effectively and selflessly worked for the betterment of the community."

The 38-year-old Grand Haven resident easily fits those characteristics, according to employees of the Center for Women in Transition who nominated Rogers.

CWIT Executive Director Charisse Mitchell said through her business in downtown Grand Haven, Donaylle Nicole Salon, Rogers has become one of the strongest supporters of the center.

Rogers has established a number of events, which not only raise funds for the center but also provide a way for women to interact and learn about helping each other. These events include a recent fashion show, downtown cut-a-thons and the monthly Bring Your Own Blowdryer evenings.

"She does amazing work," Mitchell said. "She's just a woman who stands out in our community."

Mitchell said the people at CWIT know what Rogers and her colleagues do in the community, so they nominated her for the award "so everyone else would know, too."

Rogers' own employees speak proudly of their boss. In the nomination, one of them called her "an exceptional person and outstanding boss," someone who "goes above and beyond the normal employer by taking a personal interest in each and every one of us by finding ways to help us better ourselves and be more successful."

Rogers, who grew up in Big Rapids, said she constantly faced the issues of being a minority. She said she was warned not to move to Grand Haven, let alone start a business there — but Rogers bucked the odds.

She started out small, working for another salon first, but said she has seen much success since opening her first business six years ago. Rogers is also an active member of her church, volunteering many hours a month to teach Bible classes and help out in other ways.

Members of her family are also heavily involved in charitable work — including her husband, Adam; and three children: Kennedy, 9, Bella, 6, and Jasiri, 2.

Rogers' sister, Marla Curry, said Counterpart made the right choice and that her sister was deserving of the award. "I work with her every day and I see what she tries to accomplish," Curry said. "Everything she does is about empowering and supporting women," Mitchell added.

Counterpart, founded in 1976, places emphasis on programs that benefit women and children. It gives its members an opportunity to become better acquainted with their contemporaries, and to grow in knowledge and appreciation of the community. The group has noon luncheon meetings on the first and third Wednesdays of the month at the Holiday Inn in Spring Lake. For more information, call Sabine at 844-5092. For lunch reservations, call Martha Roldan at (616) 607-9205.
